Avril, Eat Your Heart Out

A few nights ago, I ended the procrastination, threw out the excuses, and took steps towards the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. While it's usually not easy to cross over that threshold--you know the one--the divider between one's wishes and goals, and tangible action geared toward the attainment of those goals, I suppose my time had come. I decided that life's too short to just let it fritter away without exploring the depths of my potential....yes folks, I *FINALLY* bought a skateboard.

Before I go any further with this, please note the following critical facts:  1. I have never ridden a skateboard, nary set foot on one    2. I am a 28-year old (female, duh) attorney    3. Although I am very athletic for the most part, I have particular trouble when it comes to sports that require balance of any sort, and   4. I am taller than the average chick (5'10" and a half to be exact), with feet that are...well..corresponding.

I don't quite know where my intense desire to skateboard stemmed from. Perhaps it is the fact that over the past few years, Union Square has become my home away from home; it is the place I go to sunbathe, lunch, pretend to study while I people-watch, participate in strange sporadic activities like drum circles and interpretive dance, and last but not least--jealously ogle the lithe 12-year old boys pop shoving their ollie kickflips (yeahhh, totally down with the lingo brah). So my inner little boy threw a hissy fit that resulted in a trip to the local skate shop with my awesome roomie Liz.

I gots the look!

Suffice it to say our little expedition to the skateboard shop proved "entertaining". It mainly consisted of me trying to explain to the nice store clerks that I was a beginner (a.k.a. complete virgin to the sport of skateboarding with absolutely zero knowledge of skateboards, the technicalities of skateboards, or the components thereof), and having my explanation fall on deaf ears. Maybe it is the fact that I don't look, act, or dress like the typical 28-year old attorney and was rocking my sporty Diesel high-tops, but I got the distinct impression that the clerks believed I had some sort of experience.

    Sample Snippets of Conversation:

Clerk: Do you want the trucks to be tighter?

  Me: What are trucks?

  Roommate Liz: (laughter)

Clerk: How bout an 8-inch deck with more of a nose so the wheels don't catch?

Me: Um yeah. This green is really pretty. I think I want this one.

Clerk: Oh you're not even gonna see the green once its been covered up with grip tape.

  RL: (more laughter)

(Upon picking out my board and getting ready to leave the store):

Me: So, like...do I get a box...or bag for this or something?

  Clerk: Are you kidding me?!

Me: Ha ha yeah totally! ha.

So now I am officially a skater girl with all the starter bruises to show for it. I am excited about my new purchase and will hopefully be joining the pubescent boys in Union Square very soon. Next up: rock stardom.

re:excellent any way you look at it

Hi Stella. Yes I thought about taking up surfing first as an equally difficult but perhaps less painful way to get my bearings...for some reason, skateboarding won out...and i am learning it is indeed painful hitting the ground (over and over and over again haha)!

excellent any way you look at it

I did the same thing years back, just bought a skateboard. Unfortunately, hitting the ground hurts more than hitting the water and I did not take to it the same way I picked up surfing. However, fences poking my hand, scrapes, and potential embarrassment were worth it. You did it: you took action! And btw, my lovely 6'0"/size 10 shoe lady friend yesterday got on her skateboard and promptly crashed on her block. True story. It happens. Keep on!

Skaters

When I was a (pre?) teen I used to sit and stare at those skater boys down at Astor place by the cube. I'm glad there was no Avril back then because I probably would have been madly in love with her.
